Silenmelos
--- An Imaginary Town of Walls

Year: 2019
Program: Mix

Site: Imaginary Site

The name of the town, Silenmelos, derives from two Latin words “silens” and “melos”, meaning “silent melody”. This design of the imaginary town is, after all, a “silent melody of walls.”

Piranesi interpreted the wall as the basic element of the city. Drawing a contrast with the nature of the modern city - which is based on the street - Piranesi emphasized the obstructive nature of the wall. Wall is what defines, contains, constrains, limits, stops, channels, articulates and divides.

The project starts from an artistic exploration of the linearity of the town. The Initial paintings and models raise the following questions: Is there a standard definition of wall? What spatial characteristics might affect our perceptions of wall? In this project, I developed a basic grammar of wall typology which blurs the boundary between separation and enclosure.
WALL TYPOLOGY STUDY
In architecture history, walls vary in thickness, form, perforation, and their spatial relationships. The various phenomena of the walls derive from these different characteristics

HOW DO WE DEFINE “WALL”?
In the dictionary, the word “wall” is clearly defined as a continuous, vertical element. Its function is to enclose or divide areas of land. The modernization of the architecture industry facilitates the mass production of “standard wall”. However, the process at the same time reduces the richness of meanings that can be expressed through this very minimum element in architecture.
