Algae Rail-scape
---Reimagine Coastal Future at Field’s Point, Providence

Year: 2019
Program: Mix-use
Location: Field’s Point, Providence

Harmful algae blooms and sea level rise have been long-term issues at the Narragansett Bay. The seemingly negative impacts of the algae bloom, however, conceal great potential for energy production and informing new types of urban spaces.

The harmful algae bloom at Narragansett Bay can be transformed into useful resources. The project focuses on three major operations: The bio-fuel production process, the water treatment system, and the aquaculture system.

The island is subdivided into horizontal bands for different programs. The typology of architecture on each program band features a transition from rigidity on the West side to fluidity on the East side.

The system breaks the boundary among energy production, urban programs, open public spaces and the landscape. These elements are mixed up and redistributed on site into horizontal bands.

DIAGRAM OF THE SYSTEM

The continuous railway interacts with the landscape, the water, and bands of public clusters in different ways, providing various edge conditions for public interactions.
